"And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well” (c.f. 2 Timothy 2:2) July 1-7, 2013 Objective of the week: To recognize that the mission that Jesus entrusts to us is in the same Spirit and confidence that He gave to the twelve apostles. Jesus forms the twelve; to be with Him and sent them to preach. This is our dedication as VD disciples.
IntroductionAfter deepening the three of the four means of our spirituality: prayer, fraternal love and cross. The invitation of this week is to enter the fourth means which is the mission. But, what is mission? What is the mission that we are called to live? As we understand, mission is a means of deepening our prayer in order to live out our life like Jesus. Mission will follow spontaneously if we are faithful to the first three means. We are called to carry out the mission of bringing other people to the Word of God. As we live out our own lives in prayer, this aspiration to share what we need to become our deepest desire. Therefore our model for how to live out our lives must be Jesus. He walked in the streets and had compassion for the world. Let us live with his compassion that will give us the same fire of love that burned within his heart for all of our sisters and brothers. We are Verbum Dei, Jesus asks something for us, the world needs us. As Verbum Dei our identity is to go and do the mission. When we are clear about our identity it helps us in the options of our daily life to become who we are meant to be. With these guidelines for prayer, we are called to ponder and share with Jesus these experiences and its fruits. The banquet is ready but, where are the people? That is Jesus command Go out, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find. (Mat. 22:9). The harvest is big and the laborers are few. With so much work it requires that each one of us use all the capacities for the mission. Let us allow Jesus to continue the mission in us and through us in our world of today. Monday“Jesus invites us to follow Him” Matthew 8:18-22 18 When saw the crowd all about him he gave orders to leave for the other side.19 One of the then came up and said to him, Master, I follow you wherever you go.'20 Jesus said, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of has nowhere to lay his head.'21 Another man, one of the disciples, said to him, 'Lord, let me go and bury my father first.'22 But said, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead. Reflection: What hinders us in our following of Jesus? What baggage we need to unload to be fully worthy of Jesus confidence like the twelve apostles. Tuesday“Do not be afraid, follow me” Matthew 8:23-27 Then he got into the boat followed by his disciples.24 Suddenly a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But he was asleep.25 So they went to him and woke him saying, Save us, Lord, we are lost! 26 And he said to them, Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith? And then he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.27 They were astounded and said, Whatever kind of is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? Reflection: Jesus invites us to live the same mission that goes beyond our capacities. Why are you afraid to take responsibility? Are you willing to risk your time, money and effort to the mission that Jesus entrusted to you? Wednesday“We Follow the Mission of the Apostles” Ephesians 2:19-22 19 So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fellow-citizens with the holy people of and part of God's household.20 You are built upon the foundations of the and prophets, and himself is the cornerstone.21 Every structure knit together in him grows into a holy in the Lord;22 and you too, in him, are being built up into a dwelling-place of in the Spirit. Reflection: The assurance in living out our mission is Jesus himself. We are collaborators and each one of us is vital to fulfill this mission. It is Jesus the foundation of our mission? Do you think you need the others to fulfill the mission? Thursday“Jesus share with us the same mission” Matthew 9:1-8 1 He got back in the boat, crossed the water and came to his home town. 2 And suddenly some people brought him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, Take comfort, my child, your sins are forgiven. 3 And now some said to themselves, 'This is being blasphemous.' 4 Knowing what was in their minds said, Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts? 5 Now, which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven," or to say, "Get up and walk"? 6 But to prove to you that the Son of has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- then he said to the paralytic-'get up, pick up your bed and go off home.' 7 And the got up and went home. 8 A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised for having given such authority to human beings. Reflection: As disciples we experienced that Jesus lifted us from our old self and brought us back to our life. And now, how can we help others to bring from their passive life to active life? How can we lift up others who were stuck on their un-usual life? Friday“Our call to be disciples: call for others” Matthew 9:9-13 9 As was walking on from there he saw a named sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, 'Follow me. And he got up and followed him. 10 Now while he was at table in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with and his disciples. 11 When the saw this, they said to his disciples, 'Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?' 12 When he heard this he replied, 'It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. 13 Go and learn the meaning of the words: Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifice. And indeed I came to call not the upright, but sinners.' Reflection: We are all sinners, no one is holy, still in an on-going process. We are difficult people and a difficult person attracts difficult personalities back to God. It doesn’t matter how we are before what matters how we live today with the Lord and how he continue being called for others through us. Do your recognize it? Saturday“Builders of Communities” Luke 10:1-12, 17:20 1 After this the appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself would be visiting. 2 And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the of the harvest to send labourers to do his harvesting. 3 Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!" 6 And if a of peace lives there, your peace go and rest on him; if not, it come back to you. 7 Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. 8 Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you. 9 Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of is very near to you." 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, 11 "We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure of this: the kingdom of is very near." 12 I tell you, on the great Day it be more bearable for Sodom than for that town. 18 He said to them,'I watched fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you.20 Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written in heaven. Reflection: As the first disciples, Jesus sent us; give what you have, peace, hope, sincerity. Are you open to share with others what you receive, in order to create communities, where the life of God can be share? Sunday14th Sunday in Ordinary Time1st Reading: 66:10-14C
