Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 Titus 2:11-14, 3:4-7 Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 There is an alternative option for the readings: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Acts 10:34-38 Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire… 21 After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." First reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. 3 A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! 4 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; The rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. 5 Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all mankind shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken… 9 Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; Cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! 10 Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. 11 Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, Carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care. Second reading: Titus 2:11-14, 3:4-7 For the grace of God has appeared, saving all 12 and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, 13 as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of the great God and of our savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good… 3:4 But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, 5 not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, 6 whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. MEDITATION: This Sunday Jan 13 is about the Baptism of Jesus. We praise Him for the way His whole life was a humble 'ducking down', and also we're called to renew our own baptism. That's why we begin every mass saying "I confess...". John the Baptist lived very humbly (eating locusts and wild honey!) and he wanted to point to Jesus and not to himself. In fact John had to put effort into convincing people that they shouldn't respect him himself too much. At least that's a problem that I don't have! Baptism today usually involves just a small sprinkle with water on a baby's forehead, but it arose from the way John used to get people to duck completely underwater in the River Jordan. Ducking was followed by rising up again and that symbolised that death will be followed by new life. Jesus died and rose from the dead, and that was to show us that we can also. Our judge is tender. In the first reading God asks the prophet Isaiah to speak tenderly to the people (Is 40:1). Baptism is a 'sacrament' for us in the sense that it 'opens the door' to eternal Life in heaven for us. It's nice that the Son of God didn't start his public life from a golden throne, but in the queue of sinners for John's baptism in the river Jordan. That's humility. We want to join him in his resurrection, but will we join him in that humility? John says this: “The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete. He must increase; I must decrease." (Jn 3:29-30). Remember that Herod actually had John decapitated. He certainly decreased in physical size! Of course, this call to be humble isn't a call to lessen our efforts to help God to bear fruit. But the glory is for God. It's not for our own selfish mundane pride. And the marvel is that God will then have us all sharing in his glory! Our glory is totally 'enveloped' in God's glory and He actually gives us a role to play. Jesus says in the Gospel: 'By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit…' (Jn 15:8). It's important to be humble but that doesn't mean wasting any of the riches or talents that God has given us. Remember the parable of the Talents (Mt 26:14-30): "His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.' In the ancient world, the pits of society were slaves. A slave has to be very humble, but that's not necessarily bad. St Paul describes the ministry of the Word as a slavery! 'You learned the gospel from Epaphras our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ on your behalf...' (Col 1:7). It's good to delight in pleasing others, but it's bad to be dependant on their admiration or praise. If we did depend on it, then the devil would have succeeded in using some small good deed of ours to give birth to a terrible fault. Pride or self-conceit is really the worst vice. It made the devil turn from God. It's competitive by its very nature. People aren't proud of being clever, but of being cleverer than others. In other words, it's necessarily competitive. The sad thing isn't that a man rise up, but that he put others down. Pride invokes rivalry and enmity. That is an enmity with God. Pride is a death-trap that the devil uses to trap those who should follow Christianity. Pride is a spiritual cancer. It eats up our own spiritual life. The first step in becoming humble, is to recognize that I've sometimes given in to pride. Only after diagnosis of illness can health be achieved. Jesus was perfect but certainly gave clear example of humility. As the letter to the Hebrews puts it: 'Jesus is 'crowned with glory and honor' because he suffered death, he who "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.... 18 Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.' (Heb 2:9-10 + 18). As humility is good, pride can be very ugly. 'The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity--greedy, dishonest, adulterous--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' 14 I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted." (Lk 18:9-14). There's a good event marking the beginning of the Church. At the Last Supper before the passion, Jesus washed his disciples feet and then asked them to wash each other's! One of the undignified jobs of servants in the ancient Jewish world was to wash people's feet. In this world of celebrities and stars, where people try to get seen as much as possible, this is relevant in the Gospel: 'When the people saw the sign (of the loaves) Jesus had done, they said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.". Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.' (Jn 6:14-15). Look at the unusual way in which Jesus calls followers: 'They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. 3 They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. 4 I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you.' (Jn 15:2-4ª). I like the way David, who later became King David, faked madness in order to avoid dangerous opposition: 'David became afraid of the king of Gath. So, as they watched, he feigned insanity and acted like a madman in their hands, drumming on the doors of the gate and drooling onto his beard. Finally Achish said to his servants: "You see the man is mad. Why did you bring him to me? Do I not have enough madmen, that you bring in this one to carry on in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?". David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his family heard about it, they came down to him there. 2 He was joined by all those who were in difficulties or in debt, or who were embittered, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.' (1 Sam 21:13-22:2). I like the scene where David is publically praising God in dance, and he doesn't care if it gains people's respect or not: 'As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul's daughter Michal looked down through the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. 17 The ark of the LORD was brought in and set in its place within the tent David had pitched for it.... 20 When David returned to bless his own family, Saul's daughter Michal came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has honored himself today, exposing himself to the view of the slave girls of his followers, as a commoner might do!" 21 But David replied to Michal: "I was dancing before the LORD. As the LORD lives, who preferred me to your father and his whole family when he appointed me commander of the LORD'S people, Israel, not only will I make merry before the LORD, 22 but I will demean myself even more. I will be lowly in your esteem, but in the esteem of the slave girls you spoke of I will be honoured."' (2 Sam 6:16-22). He was pleasing God and being honoured by God! I think that I have been very fortunate in life up to getting my M.S., but I think that my illness actually leads to good fortune too. Look at what St Paul writes to the Corinthians: 'That I might not become too elated, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. 8 Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, 9 but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. ...for when I am weak, then I am strong.' (2 Cor 12:7-10). As Jesus talks about John the Baptist after his murder, he includes this: "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.”. (Mt 11:25-26). He wants us to give good example and make of our lives a form of witness that stimulates others to follow, and yet we should avoid seeking admiration for selfish reasons. The later attitude would make us into the pit of pride. A loving relationship with God can be a very internal, personal relationship. Jesus says this: “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father... When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.” (Mt 6:1-6, 16-18). The desire of Jesus was to establish good contact between the human family and the Father, and humility is a fundamental part of that. One of the central parts of the Gospel is where Jesus teaches the 'Our Father' (eg Lk 11:1-4), and the Jews had up to then seen God as a chief or leader (calling him 'Adonaai' etc.), so the way Jesus called him Father and 'Abba' ('Daddy'), was revolutionary for them. It's interesting that the Our Father is a series of petitions rather than of straight-forward praise, but humble asking for things establishes a relationship like that of kids at home with their dad and the fact that people ask, is a type of praise for which God longs! Also, out of fidelity to Christ our lives should not stop pointing clearly to Christ. As did the Baptist, we will try to diminish and to disappear ourselves, so that, as soon as possible, people may know the Lord, and stay alone with Him. One's intervention, as was with the precursor of Jesus, will get smaller as the person becomes more alone with Christ. That will be when the love of Christ seduces and captivates the person. Speaking as a doctor, I'd say that to be really healthy in life is to be really humble! I've got the MS which isn't very nice but the biggest 'mess' from which many of us suffer is our proud concern about people's opinion of us. To give good testimony may be a great help for others but not if it's motivated by pride. Please save me from that 'sclerosis', Lord! As people think of the Christian mission, many think that it's not for them because it needs some kind of 'saintly' individuals who have done admirable good works - who aren't in the queue of sinners. But that's not true. If it were, I probably wouldn't be a missionary priest! Our main mission is to tell of God's mercy. There's a long list of saints who show that. St Paul had supported the assassination of Christians (as we remembered on St Stephen's day on Dec 26). Think of king David's psalm asking for mercy (Ps 51). St Peter denied that he even knew Jesus on Good Friday. Jesus certainly didn't belong in that queue for John's Baptism! But that's where he chose to be. And he's so humble, that he chooses to be with you and I today! It would be nice if the lives of all of us Christians were like arrows like John pointing to Christ. Of course that won't be like cold traffic signals on the road through life, but like friendly Christmas cards encouraging people to come to the 'everlasting fiesta'. …..
1º opción: Is 40:1-5, 9-11. Tit 2:11-14, 3:4-7. Lc 3:15-16, 21-22. 2º opción: Is 42:1-4, 6-7. Hchos 10:34-38. Lc 3:15-16, 21-22. ". Juan Bautista vivió muy humildemente (¡comiendo langostas y miel silvestre!) y él quiso apuntar a Jesús y no a si mismo. Come nuestra propia vida espiritual. ". ………….Dara. Comments are closed.
